Best Brush for Chalk Paint Reviews – The UK’s Top 3 in 2022

Below are our top picks as the best brush for chalk paint or waxing, starting with a deserved test winner from a proudly British firm.

1. COTTAM Chalk & Wax Brush Set

COTTAM Chalk & Wax Brush Set (Pack of 4) - For Shabby Chic, Upcycling and Restoration Projects
  • A set of round head brushes designed for restoration enthusiasts - these brushes are perfect for applying chalk paints and furniture waxes to any renovation project.
  • Shabby chic styling, upcycling or maintaining - maximise your time by best matching a brush size to your task. Our pack contains 4 brushes in sizes 14 / 19 / 25 / 30 MM diameters.
  • Made with traditional, 100% natural bristle that holds chalk paint and wax well. The soft bristles evenly distribute with ease to create a fine finish.
  • Our birch timber handles are profiled for user comfort and brush balance to enable controlled use and reach.
  • Re-using our brushes is easy – just wash, dry and hang to dry. Perfect for next time.

Supplied in a cardboard box with cleaning instructions inside the lid, COTTAM has invested thought in their quartet of brushes.

The packaging may be eco-minimalist, but the brushes themselves are nicely tactile, with a good weight and tapered birchwood handles incorporating hanging hooks at the bottom.

COTTAM’s masterstroke – and the reason why it wins this test – is the decision to include four differently-sized brushes. There are 14mm, 19mm, 25mm and 30mm brush diameters in the box, meaning you can work on a cabinet top or the side of a drawer with the right tool for the job.

CDJX, in particular, should have considered a variety of sizes.

COTTAM are also unique in using animal hair bristles, though New Renaissance prides itself on incorporating natural rather than synthetic fibres into their brushes.

Some people have suggested COTTAM’s bristles are too stiff, leaving marks in fine chalk paint. There are also concerns about bristle loss, which often occurs with tightly packed bristles.

ProsCons
Excellent valueReported bristle loss
Manufactured from quality materialsIt may be too stiff for fine chalk paint application
Choice of diameters

2. New Renaissance Professional Chalk Paint Wax Brush

New Renaissance Professional Chalk Paint Wax Brush Painting Or Waxing with Natural Bristles
  • (2-in-1 brush) PERFECT FOR CHALK PAINT OR WAX | Works with all brands of paint and wax | For all furniture and colors
  • PREMIUM PURE BRISTLES - Natural bristles (NOT synthetic ) are best for an authentic looking chalk paint project
  • DESIGNED FOR FURNITURE - Works with all furniture
  • ANNIE SLOAN QUALITY - High quality at a better price

If you haven’t heard of the brand New Renaissance, you’re not alone. Still, this large round brush proudly bears its manufacturer’s name across a tapered cylindrical handle, with a brown leather strap suitable for hanging on a hook.

The New Renaissance is pleasing to hold and use, though the larger head might be intimidating if you’re trying to apply wax or chalk paint to delicate spindles.

Putting aside the fact this looks more like a shaving brush than a wax or paint brush, there is a lot to like about New Renaissance’s chalk paint wax brush.

This brush fulfils both core functions well, with the larger head being excellent at evenly applying wax to larger surfaces. Furthermore, COTTAM’s brushes represent exceptional value for money, offering pure bristles instead of nylon alternatives.

The main drawback to this product is its cost since it’s more expensive than either of the other sets on our shortlist.

If you’re only looking to do one restoration job, that’s fine, but the lack of other brushes will quickly frustrate regular upcyclers or DIYers.

ProsCons
Tactile leather hanging strapPoor value
It feels satisfying to holdLarge head unsuitable for delicate jobs

All the brushes in this set are identically sized, with cylindrical wooden barrels and hemispherical edges but no hanging hooks.

The inclusion of three identically sized brushes could be viewed as either overly generous or a missed opportunity, considering COTTAM provides four different head sizes for various jobs or surfaces.

It’s also worth noting that CDJX’s brushes are pretty smooth, making grip potentially tricky as a job progresses. At least they’re not overly long, measuring less than 15cm and featuring rust-proof ferrule joints.

The main concern among users involved durability, with some reports of heads falling off and chrome ferrule rings detaching.

While it may be possible to glue them back together, that’s not something you’d expect to do with any premium product, and it’s why CDJX’s products finish last in our test. On a brighter note, bristle loss doesn’t appear to be an issue.

ProsCons
Cheap and cheerfulConcerns over durability
Bristles appear robustly attachedNo way to hang them after use
Compact size is helpful

Paint Brush Buying Guide

Any upcycling or refurbishment job is only as good as the tools used, so sometimes a worker can blame his tools!

As well as recommending the best brush for chalk painting and waxing, we’ve also reviewed the best chalk paints, alongside a broader guide to every type of paint.

How to Choose the Best Brush for Chalk Paint

In terms of the brushes themselves, these are a few things to look out for:

  • Synthetic bristles are not only less environmentally friendly than natural bristles, but they’re also typically less flexible, with the potential to leave track marks.
  • Hanging hooks do more than just provide wall-mounted storage – they also let brushes drip dry after washing them.
  • Wooden handles feel tactile, but smooth ones might become slippery if you work in hot conditions or for a protracted period.
  • Bristle loss forces you to stop, remove errant hairs and then repaint over any scuffs in the newly applied paint or wax.

Brush Size

Our chosen products come in various sizes, from the single bulbous New Renaissance brush to the trio of identically sized CDJX products.

Your need for additional brushes may be influenced by whether you’re covering a sizeable flat-sided piece of furniture or getting up close and personal with intricate carvings. Imagine trying to use a paint roller on a skirting board, and you can see why a large 30mm diameter brush head wouldn’t be suitable for applying chalk paint onto a delicate chair spindle.

Pro Tip: We don’t recommend using the same brush for waxing and painting as even comprehensive cleaning won’t remove every last fragment of wax/paint. If you can, use separate brushes for these very different jobs.

Best Brush for Chalk Paint – Final Thoughts

With users expressing serious concerns over their build quality, we have to relegate CDJX’s trilogy of paintbrushes to last place in our test. That’s a shame because these good-value brushes are nicely compact, with few reports of bristle loss. They’re also far more affordable than New Renaissance’s offering, which is pricier than its rivals despite being the only brush not bundled into a multipack.

Still, if one brush is sufficient, and you don’t need a small head for edging or detailing, New Renaissance’s tactile two-in-one product does a great job of applying wax or chalk paint.

It’s impossible to look past COTTAM as our test winner. Their quartet of differently-sized brushes is ideal for varied work or anyone who plans to chalk paint and wax different objects. Add in a low price and impressive practicality, and they’re an obvious choice for any craftsperson or DIYer.
