2. Silverline 991857 Combination Square Set 300 mm – Best Versatility

Silverline 991857 Combination Square Set 300 mm
  • Stainless steel blade
  • Metric and imperial graduations
  • Knurled brass screws for easy adjustment
  • Aluminium stock 180° protractor and centre head
  • Includes scriber and vials

The Silverline Combination Square is a well-made tool that is both sharp and precise (essential for this tool!). However, the stand-out feature is its super easy-to-use compass, allowing you to work at various angles.

I liked the square’s finish and that it’s separate from the ruler – handy when welding or cutting at 90º and 45º degrees. Furthermore, the build quality is pretty good even though it’s lightweight.

How to Choose the Best Combination Square?

When choosing the best combination square for your needs, consider the following features before buying:

Size and Accuracy

This feature refers to the size of the ruler or blade, which can vary from 100mm at the small end to 600mm at the larger end.

The advantage of a smaller blade is that it fits in your toolbox comfortably, whereas a larger blade gives you more options.

Combination squares made with steel blades, durable plastic accessories and brass screws are the best materials for accuracy.

The blade is most commonly made from stainless steel. Thicker blades are more durable but are also heavier to use.

Accessories are typically plastic, so robust and durable plastic is better for longevity. Furthermore, a brass screw ensures the components are held together well.

A combination square is mainly used for marking and measuring. However, other potential uses exist for additional accessories, such as a compass/protractor head.

The standard head with any combination square is known as a ‘square head,’ but you can also fit a ‘centre head’ and a ‘protractor’ head. A centre finder head makes it easy to find round or cylindrical objects centre point.

Other great features may include a bubble level and a ruler blade with engraved measurements.

If the markings are made using the same production machine that made the blade, this may result in a blade with slightly unclear markings.

Painted markings are better, although they can fade from general wear and tear over time.

Buying a combination square that’s easy to carry is best if you move around a lot. I.e. smaller and lighter models.

However, if you’re using it in a harsh environment, you may opt for a heavier, more durable model.

Final Thoughts – Best Combination Square UK

Whether an amateur DIY enthusiast or a professional tradesman, you should consider purchasing the WorkPro Combination Square.

I love this model’s durability, versatility, and high-quality construction materials. I also like the measurement markings, as even in my dusty workshop, they’re easy to read!

Thanks to its 180-degree compass and slightly lighter frame, the Silverline offers great usage options, and the Roslon is a very durable option. However, WorkPro wins the ‘Best Combination Square UK’ award, thanks to its high scores across all our selection criteria.

Which Combination Square is the best?

While we believe that WorkPro makes the best overall combination square. However, the best model depends on how you plan to use it.

Remember, higher-quality construction materials ensure better accuracy and durability. If pinpoint accuracy and durability are not so important, buy a model made from cheaper materials and save money.

When shopping for a high-end combination square, ensure the blade is stainless steel (or, even better, chrome), the plastic accessories are sturdy, and the screws are brass.

You may also wish to consider a smaller, lighter product if used while on the move.

Is a Starrett combination square worth it?

Extreme accuracy is what sets Starrett’s Combination Square apart from the rest. However, it’s also one of the most expensive.

The other thing to consider is durability. A Sarrett combination square will likely stay in your toolbox for a lifetime.

What square does Paul Sellers use?

Paul Sellers recommends a 12″ (300mm) combination square.

This spec is an excellent option for most woodworking projects. Try squares are a little less accurate than higher-quality combination squares, in Paul’s opinion.

How accurate are combination squares?

Combination squares are very accurate tools that measure anything from 45 degrees to 90 degrees, or with the right protractor accessory, anything up to 180 degrees.

That said, accuracy does vary with each model and the age/usage of your tool. Most models have up to 0.001 inches tolerances, but regularly check your combination square for trueness.

In the video below, Ben Strano shows you how to calibrate an inaccurate combination square.
